  3. Thailand emerged as a kingdom in the 13th Century and by the late 17th century its capital, then Ayudhya, was the largest city in Southeast Asia. In 1767, Burmese invaders destroyed the city. In 1782, the present Chakri dynasty and a new capital, Bangkok, were founded.

  5. *  1855 King Mongut signs Bowring trade treaty with British ╨ Thailand never colonized by Europeans.
  6. *  1868-1910 King Chulalongkorn westenizes Thailand. Laos and Cambodia, taken by Thailand 1824-1851, ceded to France.

  8. *  1925 King Prajadhipok begins absolute rule.
  9. *  1932 Bloodless military-civilian coup. Constitutional monarchy.
  10. *  1933 Military takes full control.
  11. *  1941 Japanese invade. Government collaborates. Free-Thai movement aids Allies.
  12. *  1944 Pro-Japanese prime minister Phibun voted out of office.
  13. *  1945 Exiled King Ananda returns.
  14. *  1946 Ananda assassinated. King Bhumibol accedes.
  15. *  1947 Military coup. Phibun back.
  16. *  1957 New military coup. Constitution abolished.
  17. *  1965 Allows USA to use Thai bases in Vietnam War. Start of foreign investment and industrialization.
  18. *  1969 Military leaders allow new constitution and elected parliament.
  19. *  1971 Army suspends constitution.
  20. *  1973-1976 Student riots lead to interlude of democracy.
  21. *  1976 New military takeover.
  22. *  1979 Vietnam invades Cambodia. Thailand backs Khmer resistance.
  23. *  1980-1988 Gen. Prem Tinsulanond Prime Minister. Partial democracy restored. Center-right coalition.
  24. *  1988 Elections. Gen. Chatichai Choonhaven, right-wing CT leader, is prime minister.
  25. *  1991 Military accuses governmnet of corruption and takes over in coup. Civilian Anand Panyarachun is caretaker premier.
  26. *  1992 Elections. Gen. Suchinda named premier. Demonstrations. King forces Suchinda to step down and reinstalls Anand. September: moderates win new elections.
  27. *  1995 Prime minister Chuan Leekpai dissolves parliament after allegations of corruption in the government land reform program. New elections to be held in July.
